Program Overview

The Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA) and Concordia University Chicago (CUC) partnership allows participants to enroll in and earn graduate credit at a 20% discount. To be eligible for the discounted IASA-CUC Partnership program, students must use the dedicated application link on this page.

  • Superintendent Licensure: Students seeking this licensure need to successfully complete the  ten courses listed below. In addition, they need to pass the basic skills test and the Superintendent 225 test. Students also need to have two years of experience working full time as a principal, director of special education, chief business official or other administrative position while holding a valid administrator license. Students must provide proof of holding or having held an issued teaching license.
  • EdD, Educational Leadership: Students continuing on for the EdD in Educational Leadership from Concordia University Chicago may apply the ten courses listed below (30 semester hours) to the doctoral program. Thirty-one additional semester hours from coursework and a dissertation are required for a total of 61 semester hours. These classes may be taken online or face to face.
  • PhD, Educational Leadership: Students continuing on for the PhD in Educational Leadership from Concordia University Chicago may apply the ten courses listed below (30 semester hours) to the doctoral program. Thirty-seven additional semester hours from coursework and a dissertation are required for a total of 67 semester hours. These classes may be taken online or face to face.

Program Start

The Illinois Superintendent’s Licensure Program begins the week of July 9, 2018, and concludes at the end of summer 2020 semester.

Coursework

Ten (10) courses are required to complete the Illinois Superintendent’s Licensure. Each course is worth three (3) semester hours, for a total of 30 semester hours. 

  • EDL 7112: Strategies of Educational Leadership (offered in Springfield, IL on July 9-13 as part of the IASA summer workshop on aspiring superintendents)

The following six (6) courses are offered one night per week at CUC's main campus in River Forest, IL for eight weeks.

  • EDL 7260: School and District Improvement Using Data Analysis
  • EDL 7210: Policy Analysis
  • EDL 7235: Managing Illinois School District Finances
  • EDL 7241: Supervisory Theory and Practices
  • EDL 7255: Managing Legal and Human Resources Issues
  • EDL 7301: Ethics for Educational Leaders

Three (3) Internship seminar courses are offered, each is 16 weeks in length (dates to be determined). The internship involves the District Superintendent Internship Supervisor (DSIS), the Concordia University Chicago Internship Supervisor (CUCIS) and the intern/student. The internship sequence is completed within the candidate’s home district.

  • EDL 7894: Superintendent as Instructional Leader: Internship I
  • EDL 7895: Superintendent as Change Agent: Internship II
  • EDL 7896: Superintendent as Human Relations and Resources Manager: Internship III

Class Time and Location

All academic classes are offered from 6-10 p.m. in a face to face learning environment at the Concordia University Chicago campus in River Forest, IL. 

Admission Requirements

View admission requiremetns for Concordia-Chicago’s doctoral programs. In addition to the admission documents required for all doctoral program applicants, candidates for the superintendent licensure program or doctoral studies in Educational Leadership must provide evidence of an active and valid PEL or equivalent non-Illinois state administrator license with comparable administrative experience.

Concordia University Chicago is one of the most affordable private universities in the Midwest. Our Office of Financial Aid will work with you to seek financial aid and schedule manageable tuition payments.

Compliance

The IASA-CUC partnership meets the ELCC (2011 District Level) and CAEP standards. In addition, the partnership addresses the Comprehensive Instructional Renewal Project (CIRP).

Program Approval

The Superintendent Program at Concordia University has been granted approval by the State of Illinois Educator Preparation and Licensure Board (October 6, 2017). This approval authorizes Concordia University Chicago to conduct this program and to recommend candidates for licensure by entitlement (23 Illinois Administrative Code, Section 25.145 (b) (1).
